Angels In the Outfield
While painting my bedroom with a wonderful salmon faux finish I was watching a cute movie called Angels In the Outfield. It had a story about a boy who prayed the Angels baseball team would win the pennant. He was living in a foster home and his real dad had said he'd come get his son "when the Angels won the pennant." The boy didn't realize it was his dad's way of saying it wasn't going to happen. He prayed and soon he began to see angels helping the team members. No one could see them but him. The story had Danny Glover in it, whom I adore. It was a sweet story. Danny Glover was the head coach. Athletes are often superstitious and Danny wanted to believe, but doubted this kid could see angels. But the kid began to give him good advice. They worked out a signal that if the kid saw an angel, he would flap his arms up and down like wings.
They got to the final game of the championship and the pitcher, Tony Danza, had an arm that was killing him. Well the "head" angel told the kid that the angels couldn't help in a final pennant game and also told him that the pitcher was dying of lung cancer. The kid didn't want the coach to pull him off the mound because he wanted Danza to go out feeling good about himself, as the one who pitched the winning game. So to make the pitcher believe there was an angel, he did the wing waving signal. The coach came over and asked excitedly, "Do you see an angel?" The kid said he didn't, but that all the pitcher needed was to "believe" there was an angel. So the coach understood what he was trying to do and started flapping his "wings." Then the crowd (who knew about the angel thing by then) began to flap their wings. Everyone was flapping, giving the pitcher confidence. The pitcher believed there was an angel there to help him and threw the winning pitch. continued
